John David Whitford was born on 2 September 1875. He married Margaret (Meta) Dupree Biddle on 14 February 1899. John David Whitford died on 20 March 1944 at age 68; "A native of New Bern who spent his life here and for many years was an engineer on the Atlantic and North Carolina railroad, the Norfolk Southern and the Atlantic and East Carolina railroad, John David Whitford, II, passed away at his home at about 9 o'clock Monday evening. He was 68 years old and had been suffering with a chronic heart trouble for some time, but his death came as a surprise to his many friends.
The son of the late William Whitford and Sophie Carnelia Stevenson Whitford, Mr. Whitford was born in New Bern on September 2, 1875. He began railroad work with the old Atlantic and North Carolina railroad, and became an engineer in 1903. When the Norfolk Southern leased that road he continued service with the road, and he did the same when the Norfolk Southern lease was terminated and the Atlantic and East Carolina organization began operation. Though he had completed thirty years of railroad service some time ago, he remained in service until he was retired by reason of physical disability some years ago.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock from the home at 123 Craven Street. Rev. Charles E. Williams, rector of Christ Episcopal Church of which Mr. Whitford was a member, will conduct services, and interment in Cedar Grove Cemetery will follow..." (Sun Journal, March 22, 1944.)1
